James D. Wilson — Overland

13–24 November 2025

Gallery White Box

Overland is a solo exhibition of new landscape paintings by James D. Wilson, created following his recent summer residency at Gallery White Box. The works continue Wilson’s exploration of the shifting relationship between landscape, abstraction, and memory, with a particular focus on the crepuscular light of dawn and dusk.

Wilson’s process begins with a series of drawings that feel provisional—like fleeting impressions glimpsed while passing through the land by foot, road, or rail. In his paintings, gestures that evoke hills, valleys, and coastlines are interrupted by sharp cuts, hard edges, and mismatches. These disruptions mirror how memories of place become abstracted over time, yet their essence remains vivid and familiar. The viewer’s eye searches for continuity among the ‘broken’ parts, creating a sense of passing time and layered perspectives—views within views.

In Overland, Wilson deepens this exploration through paintings that linger in moments of transition, where light and memory shift and settle across the terrain.

Overland runs at Gallery White Box from 13–24 November 2025, with a private view on Thursday 13 November, 6–9pm. The gallery is open Thursday to Sunday, 11am–6pm, and all are warmly invited to attend.
